Scala

Scala has ancient origins. Its foundation dates back to the IV century, created by Roman citizens shipwrecked while sailing to Constantinople. It gave origin to Amalfi and Ravello and a great boost to the institution of the oldest Maritime Republic of Amalfi.

It is a very deeply spiritual village, as witnessed by the several churches, that at one time were more than one hundred, such as the Dome, located in the central square, the church and belltower of S. Giovanni Battista a Campidoglio, and the ruined Basilica of Sant’Eustachio.

It is also homeland to Gerardo de Saxo, founder, in the XI century, of the “Ospedalieri” (Knights Hospitallers), today known as the Supreme Military Order of the Knights of Malta.
